Today I’ll show you how to put into practice splines and vector lines to create a vase.

Before we start there are a few settings we need to make sure are turned on at the bottom of your screen you should see a bar with these buttons on it if you do not follow these steps to turn it on.

Right on the Document Settings will offer you a lot of choices select Capture Design History.

Step one you’ll want to come up with a size of vase because we will be creating from scratch this means we won’t be using any canvas. However that doesn’t mean we want to make a vase without knowing a general size in mind, for this project we are going to create a 200MM tall vase.

Using your line tool or L start the sketch tool set select the front face as your starting point you’ll notice a small dot this is zero.

Starting here gives us a good point and is a general point to use for any and all drawings.

Create a line from this point 200MM long with a 90 degree angle this will give you your starting point. After you’ve done that click the home button

The home button will appear anytime you put your mouse near the Facing box. Doing this will zoom your drawing out and fill the window. After clicking home click front on the cube.

Doing this will push you in a bit so using your mouse wheel zoom out just till you can see the top and bottom of the line on windows rolling forward will zoom you out.

You should see this, now we need to give our vase a base, using the line tool draw a line at 0, 75MM long 0 degrees. Keep in mind whatever your line is here it will be doubled when you are finished.

Now we can start forming our vase walls. For this you can do so however you wish but try to keep your vase wider on the bottom and more narrow at the top.

Select your Spline Tool of choice either Fit Point Spline or Control Point Spline. For this unit I’ll be using Point spline. Start your line at the right side end. The toll will snap to this point if you get it close enough.

From here on we will be working with creating our shape.

Draw out your rough shape we are going to alter it a bit after we see what it looks like in 3d so the exact shape now is not vitally important but will be after.

For my vase I opted to have a large top. Click the check mark to finish the spline tool. I went through and tuned up my line resulting in this.

Now it’s time to add a cap there are two ways we can do this but for our purposes we are going to use offsets.

Hitting O will open the offset menu, uncheck the “chain selection” box then select your bottom and spline lines like this

As you can see there is a red line next to it we will set the offset distance to 5 and click the flip button. Doing this will turn the offset to the inside line just where we want it now we are almost done, hit enter finalizing the line using your line tool draw a straight line connecting the open point at the top,

After drawing a line across this gab snapping to each end you should see the space inside change to a peach color.

This color indicates the lines are forming a closed object and you can proceed to the final step.

Click Home again to zoom out then front one last time, under the create menu select the revolve tool.

For Profile select the peach colored space inside your lines this will turn it blue.

For Axis select the 200MM line we drew running along the side of the vase

Selecting this line will now generate a fully 3D object.

Go ahead and hit enter.

Now at this point you may like or not like the shape of your vase the reason we wanted to capture design history is for this vary feature, go to your sketch drop down menu and hit the light bulb for your Sketch1

Turning this on will allow you to now see the lines that control the 3D shapes values, if there is something you do not like you can easily edit it from here even your offset line will copy the shape you change it to.

Once you’ve changed the shape to your liking go ahead and click stop sketch.

Just like that your 3D object is now changed to match.

You can continue tweaking your drawing like this till you get it to where you want even adding more details.

It should be noticed you can add all sorts of small details to really make it unique with only a few changes, replacements of splines with curves and some cut away I was able to turn that vase into this.

More advanced version of this tutorial to come demonstrating how to create increasingly complex patterns and shapes with ease.
